I am a Christian. I go to church. I got a tattoo! I am afraid I sinned and won’t go to heaven. Is it ok I got a tattoo?
Hi Ashley, that is an excellent question and a debatable question. The reason for the conflicting thoughts is from Leviticus 19:28 because it says, “Ye shall not make cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the Lord. This is a scary Bible verse, especially if you already have a tattoo! No wonder you are asking if it is a sin to get a tattoo. The truth of the matter is roughly 40% of millennial’s have at least one tattoo. That means moms, doctors, lawyers, and many professionals have a tattoo. Tattoos are no longer just for gang members, pirates, and outcasts. Leviticus 19:28 is from the Old Testament, and God was referring to the Canaanites and their harsh rituals of cutting, marking, and slashing their bodies for the dead or different Gods. The New Testament does not mention tattooing.
So long story short Ashely getting a tattoo is not a sin. However, our bodies are a temple of God. We are His children, and God expects us to respect and love our bodies because we are His creation in His image. That being said, getting a tattoo should be taken seriously. If you are getting a tattoo think about why you are getting the tattoo and for what reason. Respect your body and your tattoo because it is going to be there for along time.
If you have a tattoo or want a tattoo, it will not stop you from going to heaven. A tattoo does not make you a bad Christian or a sinful person. Enjoy your life, quit being so hard on yourself, love others, and be blessed by following Christ. There are many other problems we have to overcome in life; a tattoo should not be one of them.
Stay Strong, and enjoy your tattoo!
