Am I living in Sin? Q&A

Dear Strong Girls,

I live with my boyfriend. We have talked about getting married, but nothing ever comes of it. Lately, I have been bothered by my living situation. I am Christian, but I am not a member of any of my local churches. I do not think God is happy with me. Am I living in sin?

Lori from Maine

Hi Lori,

Living with your boyfriend and not getting married has become more and more popular in our society for several reasons:—no commitment, easier, cheaper, and less complicated, to name a few. We could spin the answer to your question and say it is a not sin, or it is a sin to live with your boyfriend. The answer depends on who you talk to and what response you want to hear.

First of all, the Bible does not say explicitly living with your boyfriend is a sin. However, there are lots of Bible verses that mention that this type of relationship is not what God had in mind between a man and a woman. Dozens of Bible verses interpret this type of relationship as sinful.

A good Bible verse is 1 Corinthians 7:34 And his interests are divided. And the unmarried or betrothed woman is anxious about the things of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit. But the married woman is anxious about worldly things, how to please her husband.” This is a perfect Bible verse for you to look up and read for yourself. It explains that an unmarried woman living with a man is anxious about how God views her because she knows that it is wrong in her soul. A married woman does not have those worries only to care for her husband and family.

God loves you, Lori, and you are one of His children. Maybe you are bothered by your living conditions because God might be trying to tell you something. If you were not bothered by your situation, you would not have even written in. Your Holy Spirit is a great communicator between you and Jesus. Listen and believe. God wants you to be commented to Him with all your heart and all your soul. Likewise, God created marriage between a man and a woman as a commitment too. I am glad you wrote in because that was your first step to listening to your conscience and spirit.

Is living with someone a sin? Maybe or maybe not. To those who ask for there sins to be forgiven and invite Jesus in their heart are born again. Once you are born again, you begin to live more Christ-like. A permanent commitment would make your soul happy because you are following God’s plan of marriage by becoming one.

Genesis 2:24 “Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

I hope this helps Lori. If your boyfriend really loves you, he will respect you and want to make you happy! Keep following your spirit, pray, and believe!!
