Dear Strong Girls,
I have a question that I am too embarrassed to ask my friends because I feel it is a question I should know. What does it mean to be born again, and is it the same thing as being saved?
~Samatha from New York
Do not be embarrassed because that is about one of the most important questions you can ask, especially being a Christian! Through the work of Jesus Christ and God’s grace, a person is “saved.” “Saved” meaning by faith alone, a person believes and accepts Jesus. It is important to note that a person cannot be “saved” by his or her actions, works, and law-abiding behavior. In other words,
Samatha, a person cannot be saved by earning her place in heaven. It is through faith alone in Jesus Christ that a believer will be saved. Paul reinforces this truth in Romans, “For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law” (Romans 3:28, NIV). The gift of salvation is rooted in God’s grace. Paul confirms to the Church of Ephesus, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works so that no one can boast” (Eph 2:8-9, NIV).
Once a person accepts Christ into his or her heart, he or she is a new creation, “born again.” A believer is no longer under the dominion of sin but operates with God’s grace. With the Holy Spirit’s help, a believer begins his or her journey of sanctification. The Christian journey of sanctification is to become Christ-like. Paul reminds us, “for all have sinned and fall short of God’s glory” (Romans 3:23, NIV). Therefore, a believer should not strive for perfection, but attempt to keep God at the center of one’s life. Ultimately, believers are a part of God’s plan now and in the future glory. While sanctification is never complete in this life, believers have total assurance of God’s love.
“Being Saved” is the first step in your Christian journey and is the act of accepting Jesus Christ into your heart by faith. Once you invite Jesus, in your heart, you are a new creation. We co-labor with the Holy Spirit inside us to become more Christ-Like. Samatha ask Jesus into your heart. You can pray it, whisper it, or scream it to start your fantastic journey of walking with Jesus because you are “born again!”
