I Never Pray Before Meals Does That Make Me a Bad Christian?

Hi, Strong Girls I have a question!

I never pray before I eat but I always pray at night time before I go to sleep. I thought of this today when I was out to lunch with my girlfriends. After seeing an older lady eating by herself praying before her lunch. The waitress came to her and put her salad down and walked away.

The older lady closed her eyes, bowed her head, paused for a second, and opened her eyes. That is when I realized she was praying. I thought to myself, I never pray before meals does that make me a bad Christian?

Abby from Washington

Abby this a very good question,

Christians say grace, pray, or bless their food before meals. The reason is to thank God for providing the food they have in front of them. It is showing gratitude towards God. God is gracious, and by bowing our heads, we are saying, “I love you and Thank you. I know you are my Provider.” This pleases God very much when we pray.

Just because you are not in the habit of praying at meals does not make you a bad Christian. God knows your heart, and the fact that it bothers you enough to write into Strong Girls shows that you love our Father very much.

If a person recites the same prayer three times a day with no feeling then that prayer is empty-hearted, and God knows there is no real gratitude. Mealtimes are usually a social time for a lot of us.

Praying around friends in a loud public place can be hard to remember to do. However, if you remember to only pray at night, and you genuinely talk with God and tell Him your concerns, desires, and dreams with thankfulness that pleases God.

The lady you saw at lunch with your girlfriends saying grace was truly thanking our Father in Heaven. I know this because you remembered her, and the Holy Spirit put her on your heart. Praying before meals is a good practice because we follow the example of Jesus to show our provisions to God, our Father.

Mathew 15:36 He took the seven loaves and the fish, and having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.

I hope this helps Abby!
